The Drexel University College of Medicine is an 11-story building with masonry exterior vertical walls. TBS was engaged by the architectural firm of Francis Cauffman to review/assess the existing conditions at the exterior vertical walls and design and document the necessary remedial work for inclusion with the Exterior Façade Re-Imaging and Lobby Upgrades project.
In addition TBS provided technical assistance to Francis Cauffman during the design and documentation phases of the new exterior components including new curtainwall and window systems, masonry cladding, flashings, waterproofing, etc.
The design called for removing all cracked or damaged exterior face brick units and replacing with new brick units to match the existing. All brick to brick joints at the exterior masonry walls were removed and repointed with new mortar to match the existing. All brick to concrete joints at the masonry walls were removed and new backer rod and sealant was installed. A new elastomeric coating system was applied to the existing concrete and masonry surfaces. All damaged terra cotta was removed and replaced with a new single component, cementitious, mineral based repair mortar.
