The original building, constructed in 1882, was the estate of Richard J. Seltzer, a Philadelphia realtor until 1935 when it became the home of the Archbishops of Philadelphia. There was an addition constructed at an unknown date and St.
Joseph’s University acquired the property from the Archdiocese of Philadelphia in 2012 with renovations in 2013 to convert it to the Welcome Center.
TBS Services, Inc. was selected to perform an up-close visual review survey of the existing slate roof conditions and exterior masonry conditions adjacent to the roof and provide recommendations for repairs. This included the construction of the rafters and structural decking, roof terminations, flashings, joint sealants, etc.
TBS worked closely with the University to define the remedial work to properly replace several broken/missing slate tiles, copper ridge and bib flashing and nails. The project also included the replacement of damaged gutters and a new roof hatch at the low-sloped roof area.
