The goal for TBS Services at Hartshorn Hall Roofs was to survey, design, and document the replacement of the existing slate, modified built-up and EPDM roofing systems, utilizing the most current published Facilities Design Standards.
Constructed in 1931 as a gymnasium for the Women’s College, Hartshorn Hall was renovated in 1990 for use by the Professional Theatre Program.
The Project included replacement of the low-slope roofing with a new multi-ply modified bitumen membrane system. New slate was installed on the adjacent gambrel roof and a white metal standing seam roof was installed over the existing vaulted roof over the interior theater space.
The project requirements called for intense coordination among trades and schedule for the occupants of the building including any ongoing performances. The ducts and mechanical units at Roof 9 received new insulated jacketing which was coordinated with the adjacent standing seam roof to the immediate east, and new slate roof to the immediate west.
In addition, masonry work was included as large sections of the brick parapet chimneys received new base and reglet flashing, and the brick was re-pointed.
